hello world, I want to start new language (Samogitian) in wikipedia. Where are about 0.5 million samogitians in west Lithuania and about another 0.5 million understand. The 3 letter language code for Samogitian could be "smg" so the URL should be http://smg.wikipedia.org. I am a native speaker and know the requirement for samogitian in web. It would be good start for computerisation this language :-D

Hi Arns,

I'm happy to see activity on Samogitian language modernization. You have very good article about Samogitian in enWikipedia. I think Samogitian is worth to have its own Wikipedia. You should add your request to http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages But it seems to be very hard to establish Wikipedia in a new language. I requested for creating Võro language Wikipedia in January and there are very many other wikis that are waiting to be created, but as much as I know only one - Ossetian Wikipedia - has been created in this year. So you must be ready for very long waiting. Good luck to Samogitian!

Sveikas, Zordsdavini! This is Chamdarae, from Meta-wiki. I also left a message on your user page. I see you started a test wikipedia for Samogitian, but there are no articles yet. I supported your request for a wikipedia on the "New requests" page, and I'd like to help. Unfortunately I don't speak Samogitian or Lithuanian, but I hope that your language can develop online. Anyway, if you want a Samogitian wikipedia to start soon, I *strongly* recommend that you: 1) write some articles for the test-wp 2) find some more Samogitians to support you

I think there will be some new wikipedias pretty soon. If you have at least 20 articles in the test-wiki and one or two more Samogitians supporting you, there's a good chance that Samogitian might be one of them. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. And good luck!

Richard (Chamdarae)

Hi Arns!

A message has been sent to wikitech-l requesting the wikipedia in Samogitian (and 4 others). Servien sent the original message, and I sent a message about codes. I recommended "bat-smg", but said "qsm" is also OK. Hopefully it will work. We'll just have to wait and hope for the best.

Also I saw the symbol on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDemaitiu_ra%C5%A1%C4%ABba. I changed "vaizdas" to "image" so we can see it on meta. I don't know of any other language which uses this character, and couldn't find it in any font I know of. You may need to use a different character in the short term, and eventually get a new font designed.

But it is possible to create a table of other symbols for editing text. And hopefully all symbols can be shown there.

Richard

bug, pih, vec, lmo and udm wiki, the five approved wikipedias that had an ISO code at meta:Approved requests for new languages have been created, I didn't create the other ones because we don't have any standard way to determine a code to be used by these projects and I didn't want to make something up.

Hello world, I'm happy for others approved wikipedias that had an ISO codes. :))))) But I'm sad, because Samogitian doesn't have ISO code and... I hope that developers will not be so cruel and justice will be restored. Good luck bug, pih, vec, lmo and udm wiki developers :)

Hi,

Yes - I've been looking forward most to the Samogitian one, since I'm interested in the language and culture of the Baltic states and Samogitian is an important part of that heritage. Isn't the standard form just to use the ISO code for the language family and then the SIL code? For the Aromanian Wikipedia we used that, in the form: roa-rup, where "roa" = ISO Romance languages other and "rup" - SIL code for Aromanian. The same was done for Voro - fiu-vro. But I think Samogitian doesn't have a SIL code either...

On another note, a big congratulations to the four Wikipedias set up. A special one for Venetian and Lombard - it's great to have Wikipedias in as many Romance languages as possible, especially the less-well-known ones. I'd really like to contribute to these two, since the language is similar to Romanian.

Hi,

congratulation to Buginese, Norfuk, Veneto and Lumbaart users! And especial congratulations to Udmurts! There is so little Finno-Ugric languages that have their own Wikipedias. I hope the Udmurt Wiki will help much to the Udmurt people and their language!

I think Ronline is right about Samogitian Wikipedia. It could be started with a xxx-xxx code like fiu-vro and roa-rup. Could it be for Samogitian something like blt-sam or blt-smo?

Hello, About Samogitian code. It's good that the code looks like "bat-***". We, Samogitians, say "smg" or "zm" (from "žemaitiu", which means the same - "Samogitian"). After all, we discused about codes with Chamdarae if there is nead for local code it could be "qsm". Arns Udovičė

hello

I'm onw of these who can't get wp for 4-5 monthes (since the middle of June) :( Couse we are small community (about 0.5 mln) my plan is:

when wp will be created I will give report about it to Samogitian Cultural Society. I think I will have some conversations with young people and government of Samogitian Cultural Society and here I hope I will find big help (about 80%).

in the begining this wp would be for samogitian subjects (culture and like that) That's it. The domain is "bat-smg" or if You like only local domains - 'qsm". Interface could be Lithuanian at thirst. There is only one little problem about one letter which isn't in other languages (but it doesn't change the facts - Samogitian wp have to be created).

A letter that does not exist in other languages is no problem, as long as this letter has a UTF-8 code. We have languages that have a whole alphabet for themselves.

this letter couls be written: 0116 0305 and 0117 0305. And looks like: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDemaitiu_ra%C5%A1%C4%ABba But UTF-8 on some browsers doesn't looks so nice

Arns, by all means: start writing articles and do not give up. I cannot help you directly, but I could insert articles you have on my portal for download. (http://www.wesolveitnet.com). It is a portal for tanslators and languages.

Try to find people speaking Samogitian who live outside in the world.

Create a group for Samogitian on http://yahoogroups.com - invite all interested people there to talk, create a newsletter, print it out and hand it over to people who don't have a computer - give it to the public library, schools and whatever, tell people about your dream.

I will help you where I can, ok?

Best, Sabine

Are there any other Samogitian speakers at the Lithuanian Wikipedia? Maybe they could help contribute as well. I think maybe it would be better to contact the Samogitian Cultural Society now, when the Wikipedia is still pending, so that they could help you with the Test-Wikipedia. At Vlax Romany, we're proposing to have at least ten articles in the test-wp, as well as the interface file translated.

As to the subdomain - I think it would be better to have the native name as the subdomain - perhaps bat-zmt.

I'm looking forward to the Samogitian Wikipedia - I'd like to help if you want, by doing some template articles like countries, similar to what I did at Voro. I think it's really important that we promote Baltic-area languages!
